Local businesses host collection sites standard

PDC Barn in Taumarunui, Fruitfed Supplies in Ohakune and Farmlands in Taupo are three companies locally supporting the push for sustainability and environmental best practice in our primary industries. All three companies are now collection sites in the Central North Island for the Agrecovery Container Recycling programme. The programme allows farmers and growers across the country to recycle empty 1 – 60 litre plastic containers. Eligible containers from the 55 agrichemical, biological, animal health and dairy hygiene companies who support this product stewardship programme can be recycled for free. New Drum recovery programme standard

Avoiding accidents with agrichemicals is high on the agenda with a new drum recovery programme launched by Agrecovery Rural Recycling. The Agrecovery Drum programme offers farmers and growers around the country free on property collection for plastic or steel drums from 61 - 1000 litres in size. Drums must be empty and triple rinsed. The programme follows international best practice ensuring that drums are returned to the manufacturer or reconditioned through an approved contractor. Those that have reached the end of their useful life will be appropriately recycled; a process certified by Agrecovery’s recycling partners. Reducing unwanted agrichemical stocks standard

Chemicals, unable to be disposed of within New Zealand, are transferred offshore for safe disposal. The collection of unwanted agrichemicals this year is set to be stronger than 2010’s record of nearly 10 tonnes collected through the nationwide Agrecovery Chemicals Programme. Otago topped the seven regional collections in 2010 with 1921 kilograms collected. According to Debbie Sherwood, coordinator for the Agrecovery Chemicals programme, booking volumes have been equally strong in 2011, showing chemicals are still a problem on many properties. “We have completed three collections so far this year, with a record 2060 kg collected in Canterbury.
