Plastic recycling volume doubles standard

The Agrecovery Rural Recycling programme has experienced unprecedented growth over the last two years, with collection of waste plastics reaching record levels. Container plastic collected and sent for recycling by Agrecovery in the 12 months to June 2012 was 157,390kg. “This represents growth of 30% over the previous twelve months,” says Graeme Peters, chair of the Agrecovery Foundation. “Combined with growth of 49% from the twelve months prior to that, we’ve nearly doubled the volume of plastic collected in two years. New collection sites in Pukekohe and Levin standard

Farmlands in Levin and Pukekohe are supporting the push for sustainability and environmental best practice with the opening of Agrecovery Container collection sites at these stores. Local farmers, growers, contractors and golf courses can make the most of this recycling programme at these sites which will accept eligible plastic containers on Monday to Fridays, from 8:30am to 4:30pm (Levin) and 8am to 4pm (Pukekohe). Empty triple rinsed containers, 1 – 60 litres in size, from 57 brand owners of agrichemical, biological, animal health and dairy hygiene products can be recycled for free. To celebrate the opening of three new collection sites in Northland, Agrecovery Rural Recycling is offering recyclers the chance to win a $300 reward. The promotion aims to encourage farmers, growers, contractors and golf courses to make the most of this recycling programme for 1 – 60 litre plastic containers. Recycling pays off for competition winners standard

Ten farmers and growers are $500 better off after recycling with the Agrecovery Rural Recycling Container programme during a recent promotion. The promotion encouraged recycling of plastic agrichemical, animal health and dairy hygiene containers at 70 collection sites across New Zealand. Those recycling during March and April went in the draw to win one of ten $500 vouchers to spend at the rural supplier of their choice. Ranging from Waipapa in the north to Ashburton in south, the winners show a good cross section of the primary sector are using the programme, including kiwifruit, citrus, potato and bulb growers, a vineyard, livestock farmers, a spray contractor and even a biodiesel and oilseed plant. Agrecovery wins award standard

Agrecovery has just been awarded a Taranaki Regional Council Environmental Award 2012. The awards recognise initiatives that maintain and enhance the region’s high-quality environment. Nicolette West, Waste Minimisation Officer, said “This award recognises that the Agrecovery programmes provide an easy and safe system for farmers to dispose of chemicals and plastics that could otherwise cause environmental problems by being disposed of on farms or sent to landfill. “The scheme significantly reduces the amount of waste in the region and conserves resources.” Leon McPhillips, North Island Sales & Relationship Coordinator for Agrecovery, is pictured with David MacLeod, Chairman of TRC, at the award ceremony at the council on Tuesday 15th May.

New brand owners for drum recovery standard

In September 2011 Agrecovery launched a programme for the recovery of 61 – 1000 litre plastic and steel drums. The programme started with seven participating brand owners, there now are fourteen! Drums belonging to the fourteen brand owners are eligible for free on-property collection. Drums must be empty, triple rinsed and reasonably clean. Chemical recovery ramps up in New Year standard

The Agrecovery Chemicals recovery programme will be holding six regional collections for unwanted or expired agrichemicals early in the New Year. Collections will be held in the Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Taranaki, Manawatu (including Ruahephu, Wanganui, Rangitikei and Horowhenua districts), Nelson and the Greater Wellington region (including Wairarapa and Kapiti). Ten regional collections held during the 2010 – 2011 financial period resulted in just over 15,000kg of unwanted agrichemicals cleared from rural properties. The three largest collections were held in Canterbury, Otago and Auckland recovering 2,060kg, 1,921kg and 1,908kg respectively.
