Agrecovery Rural Recycling will be holding a free collection event in Te Puna on 18th June to encourage farmers, growers and sports turf managers to recycle agrichemical containers. Two recent events held in Taihape and Darfield (Canterbury) collected nearly 5,000 containers that would otherwise have been burned or dumped on properties. “With increasing pressure on farmers to make good environmental decisions we want this free recycling programme to be more accessible and reduce unnecessary burning and dumping of plastic,” says Duncan Scotland of Agrecovery. “We have five permanent sites across the Bay of Plenty in Katikati, Te Puke, Edgecumbe, Opotiki and Rotorua, but we know that Te Puna is also a high use area for agrichemicals, so it makes sense ...

Worldwide, a total of nearly 130 million kilograms of crop protection product containers have been recycled since the CropLife International container management initiative began about a decade ago. “Recycling used crop protection containers goes a long way in environmental benefits,” notes Detlef Doehnert, Ph.D., chair of CropLife International’s Container Management Project Team. “It’s easy to demonstrate the value of container management programs.” For instance, about 30,000 to 70,000 tonnes of empty crop protection product containers were collected each year between 2005 and 2012. A total of nearly 400,000 tonnes of containers. About 50 percent of them were in Brazil, which has the largest container management program in the world. In 2012, over 37,000 tonnes of plastic were collected there alone, ...
Agrecovery Rural Recycling is returning to rural Canterbury to hold five free container recycling events following the success of previous collections. Three events in Darfield and Fairlie in 2012 netted around 2,000kg of plastic, equivalent to approximately 4,000 containers that might otherwise have been burned or buried on local farms. This year, events will be held in Darfield, Fairlie, Cheviot, Geraldine and Oxford. “We have 12 permanent collections sites across Canterbury which provide year round access to recycling for farmers and growers, however with the ban on burning and dumping we want to widen that network as much as possible,” says Duncan Scotland of Agrecovery. A number of retailers and contractors are supporting the events including Farmlands, PGG Wrightson and ...
Auckland farmers and growers are being urged to make use of a subsidised programme to get rid of their unwanted agrichemicals. Agrecovery offers farmers the chance to safely dispose of potentially dangerous chemicals, with many free of charge or subsidised – they just need to book here by 2 May 2014 or ring 0800 247 326. Agrecovery Chair Graeme Peters says the collection is a crucial part of protecting the future of the industry. “These are chemicals that pose a safety risk by being left in sheds, or eventually end up in our waterways or on our land.” Safe and fully compliant, Agrecovery supports farmers and growers with a fully auditable report, which can be used for New Zealand GAP ...
Agrecovery Rural Recycling is returning to Taihape to hold another free container recycling event following the success of the November 2013 collection. Local businesses Farmlands, PGG Wrightson and Ruapehu Farm Supplies are again supporting the Agrecovery initiative which will be held on 2nd April. Last year, the one day collection netted over 600kg of plastic that might otherwise have been burned or buried on local farms. “We promised that if we got a good result last year, we’d be back,” says Duncan Scotland of Agrecovery. “We hope to have an even better collection this year.” Farmers and contractors can bring their empty, triple rinsed agrichemical and animal health plastic containers to Ruapehu Farm Supplies at 118 Hautapu Street, between 10am ...
Waikato farmers and growers have until 28 March to take advantage of available funding for the disposal of unwanted agrichemicals at the upcoming Agrecovery collection. Waikato Regional Council has supplemented the funding provided by 57 Agrecovery brand owners for the collection and disposal of agrichemicals and animal health products. “We’ve received significant bookings for the collection, however funding is still available,” said Jason Richards, chemicals programme manager for Agrecovery. “We would like to see farmers and growers book safe disposal rather than leave old chemicals sitting in sheds on their property where they pose a real safety risk.” The booking deadline for those wanting to dispose of agrichemicals through Agrecovery is 28 March 2014. Many agrichemicals and animal health products ...
