Cutting regulation might signal a win for farming, but not when it comes to recycling.
Why is recycling regulation a win for farmers?
Because every manufacturer of farm plastics will contribute to the sustainable recovery of the products they put into the market. Applying the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) concept, manufacturers or importers who bring products to NZ will need to participate in recycling initiatives.
So what?
Under regulation, farmers and growers would, in time, be able to recycle all farm plastics – for free! No more checking to see which brands participate in recycling before using our services —grab all suitable product types and give them to us.
You won’t be left with items that should be able to be recycled with us but can’t be, meaning less sorting and less problem-solving on what to do with those extra items.
The bottom line: Less work for farmers, and better sustainability credentials to demonstrate to customers.
When is this happening?
The Ministry for the Environment has accredited Agrecovery to recover all farm plastics. We are working with the Ministry to finalise a consultation document for prioritising farm plastics under the Waste Minimisation Act.
Subject to Cabinet approval, the Ministry plans to consult on the regulation in early 2025 — bringing us one step closer to realising our goal of recovering more plastic and simplifying recycling for rural communities.
Alongside our current programmes, schemes will cover animal health, and household pest and weed product packaging.
We’re not waiting for regulation
We’re already moving ahead with voluntary recycling schemes to help realise the end goal of this initiative. Farmers are asking for more waste solutions, and we’re delivering, with four schemes already underway. Our focus is on providing practical customer-centric solutions now, so when regulation arrives, we’ll be prepared with a wide-ranging recycling network.
